What to expect
Our Bikeability courses are a great way for kids to enjoy fresh air and exercise while learning to ride at a level appropriate to their age. Our friendly instructors will support your child to cycle confidently while developing self-awareness, road safety and forward planning skills.
Our courses
We offer a variety of different levels for different age groups. Your child will need a roadworthy bike to attend. Prices vary depending on location, as we receive different levels of funding from Local Authorities. Scroll down for full details of our courses and prices.
Our instructors
Our instructors are qualified to teach children to the ‘National Standard for Cycling,’ as defined by the Department of Transport. They all:
- Are DBS checked.
- Hold a First Aid qualification.
- Have lots of experience teaching groups of children.

Our courses
We deliver Bikeability training courses on behalf of Active Travel England. All courses are based on the National Standard for cycle training.
Bikeability Learn to Ride
School years: Any
Locations: Swindon
Price: Free
This course is two hours, delivered over two sessions. It's designed for children who can’t cycle, particularly those who are struggling. All learning is off-road, taught in small groups, and in a pressure-free environment.
Bikeability Level One
School years: Three and four
Locations: Swindon
Price: Free
Overview
This two-hour course takes place off-road in a traffic-free environment. Our qualified instructors teach groups of up to 12 children the essential skills to progress to level two. Your child must be able to ride without stabilisers to attend.
We cover
- Check me and my bike are ready for a journey.
- Glide: smooth, calm and collected.
- Control your bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping.
- Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control.
- Be aware of your surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles.
Bikeability Level Two
School years: Five, six and seven
Locations: Bristol, North Somerset, Swindon
Price: Free - £55 per child
Overview
This course starts off-road, then moves onto quieter roads to create a real cycling experience. Our qualified instructors support groups of 12 children to build confidence and learn road safety awareness. To attend, your child must be able to able to cycle one-handed and look over their shoulder.
We cover
- Start and stop with more confidence.
- Pass stationary vehicles parked on a road.
- Understand the road: signals, signs and road markings.
- Negotiate the road: including quiet junctions, crossroads and roundabouts.
- Share the road with other vehicles.
The course is delivered in two, three-hour sessions.
Bikeability Level Two-Three Refresher
School years: Year seven and above
Locations: Swindon

Overview
This course is for learners to revisit and strengthen their level two skills before moving on to level three. The course takes place on quieter roads to create a real cycling experience. Our qualified instructors support groups of up to three children. To attend, your child will have completed level two or be able to ride to level two standard.
We cover
- Start and stop with more confidence.
- Pass stationary vehicles parked on a road.
- Understand the road: signals, signs and road markings.
- Negotiate the road: including quiet junctions, crossroads and roundabouts.
- Share the road with other vehicles.
The course is five hours long, delivered over two sessions.
Bikeability Level Three
School years: Seven, eight and nine
Locations: Bristol, North Somerset, Swindon
Price: Free - £55 per child
Overview
This advanced training for children aged 11+ takes place in more complex traffic systems. Two of our qualified instructors will lead groups of six children as they build the skills to cycle wherever they want, whenever they want. To attend, your child must be able to cycle one handed, look over their shoulder, use gears effectively and stop with control.
We cover
Your child will learn more advanced skills, including how to:
- Use the best riding position for any situation.
- Ride alongside other cyclists.
- Ride on more complex roads.
- Negotiate more complex roads. For example, junctions controlled by traffic lights, multi-lane roads or cycle lanes.
- Respond confidently when a situation changes. For example, when a vehicle pulls out in front.
This course is delivered over one or two sessions, depending on your local authority area.
